Not Fast, Not Easy, Still Worth It

Losing weight in today’s world feels like swimming upstream in a river full of unrealistic expectations, toxic positivity, and a whole lot of judgment. Everyone has an opinion. Everyone has a quick fix. But no one talks about how hard it is to exist in a body that society has already labeled lazy, broken, or somehow unworthy.

Let me be real with you—this journey has been long, ugly, and exhausting. And yet, it’s also been the most freeing and powerful thing I’ve ever done. But not for the reasons you might think.

The number on the scale is only one small piece of the puzzle. The real transformation? It’s in the mindset, the small daily battles, and the decision to keep going when everything in your body and brain screams, “Why bother?”

For most of my life, I lived in an all-or-nothing mindset. If I couldn’t be perfect, why even try? If I couldn’t lose the weight fast, I must be doing it wrong. If I didn’t look like the girl on the magazine cover, what was the point?

That toxic thinking kept me stuck. Stuck in crash diets, shame spirals, and the cycle of giving up before I even had a chance to succeed. It’s the same cycle so many of us are trapped in because our culture glorifies speed over sustainability, aesthetics over health, and punishment over compassion.

I’ve lost over 200 pounds—not because I hated myself, but because I finally started loving myself enough to stop the mental abuse. I stopped chasing “skinny” and started pursuing strength, peace, and possibility. But even now, I don’t feel like I belong.

Not at the gym, where bodies like mine are still seen as “before” pictures. Where I’m constantly overperforming just to prove I deserve to be there.

Not in social spaces, where I feel eyes lingering a little too long when I order food, or the unspoken assumptions that if I’m overweight, I must not be trying hard enough.

But here’s what I’ve learned, and what I’ll keep saying: you don’t have to earn the right to exist in your body. You don’t have to shrink yourself to take up less space. You have always had the right to be seen, to be heard, and to take up space—exactly as you are.

This journey isn’t about proving anything to anyone else. It’s not about racing to the finish line or getting gold stars from people who don’t know your battles. It’s about becoming healthier—not just physically, but mentally and emotionally too. It’s about making sustainable changes that support you for the rest of your life, not just for the next photo op or diet cycle.

This isn’t about perfection. This isn’t about fitting in. This is about choosing to show up even when it’s hard. It’s about throwing out the “all or nothing” rulebook and embracing progress, no matter how slow or messy it looks.

There’s power in the middle ground. In the gray areas. In the tiny, unglamorous victories that no one claps for—like skipping the binge, going for the walk, or choosing self-compassion over self-loathing.

So no, it hasn’t been fast. It hasn’t been easy. But every single step forward, no matter how small, has been worth it.

And I’m still walking. Still learning. Still rising.

If you’re out there feeling like you don’t belong—at the gym, at the table, or even in your own skin—I see you. You do belong. Your pace is enough. Your effort is enough. You are enough.

Let’s stop shrinking to be accepted. Let’s stop rushing to be validated. Let’s start rooting ourselves in grace, in grit, and in the truth that our worth is not measured by weight, and our health is not defined by speed.
