Finding the One Certainty in Your Weight Loss Journey

In his Second Meditation, Descartes strips away everything he believes he knows. He doubts the world, his senses, even his own body. Yet one truth remains firm: if he is thinking, then he must exist. This becomes the unshakable foundation for all further knowledge.

In the same way, when you begin your weight loss journey, doubt is everywhere. Which diet is right? Can you trust calorie trackers? Will you stick to it this time? These questions swirl until it feels like there’s no solid ground. But if you look closely, one certainty always remains — and it is enough to build upon.

Doubt Is Part of the Process

You’ve probably experienced this before: one expert tells you carbs are the problem, another says fat, another says it’s all about meal timing. Add in your own past attempts that didn’t last, and doubt feels overwhelming.

But doubt isn’t failure — it’s actually part of the process. Just like Descartes questioned everything to uncover the truth, you can allow yourself to question what hasn’t worked for you. That questioning clears space for a new foundation.

The Foundation: “I Exist, Therefore I Can Choose”

Descartes’ famous line was: “I think, therefore I am.”
For your health, the parallel is: “I exist, therefore I can choose.”

No matter how much you doubt, one thing remains: you are here, alive, aware, and capable of making choices. This truth doesn’t depend on a diet trend, a number on the scale, or anyone else’s opinion. It’s yours, unshakable.

Why This Matters for Weight Loss

When you stand on this certainty, the chaos quiets down. You don’t have to have every answer today. You don’t need the perfect plan yet. You only need to begin from the place of power that says:

  • You are real.
  • You are capable.
  • You can choose differently today than you did yesterday.

That foundation makes room for change. Just like Descartes used his one certainty to rebuild all knowledge, you can use your certainty — your existence and your ability to choose — as the starting point to rebuild your health.

Reflection

Take a moment and set aside the diets, the failures, and the noise. Sit with this simple truth: you are here, and you can choose. Let that certainty steady you. From here, every new step you take becomes possible.

In Part 3, we’ll follow Descartes as he explores where ideas come from — and what that means for your health journey. Are the beliefs you hold about weight loss truly your own, or have they been planted by diet culture, family patterns, or social media? Just as Descartes examined the source of his thoughts, you’ll learn how to separate outside noise from inner truth.
